ASUU strike: Police tear gas protesting UniAbuja lecturers

The Nigerian Police Force Wednesday, tear-gassed members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, University of Abuja branch as they mobilise for their protest into the streets of the Federal Capital City, Abuja. Eyewitnesses said that the lecturers had gathered at the mini-campus of the university at Gwagwalada for the protest when suddenly policemen and plain clothes security personnel took over the entire arena and prevented them from the embarking on the protest. Speaking to journalists, the zonal Chairman of ASUU, Dr. Clement Chup said ASUU sent a letter to the Commissioner of Police at Gwagwalada to notify him of their protest but was surprised when they were prevented by Police from entering into campus. According to him, “We members of Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU of University of Abuja had actually planned to carry out a peaceful demonstration today . What we planned was to have a community marching just to march through some major streets in Abuja, to sensitize the public on the essence of our strike.

ASUU STRIKE: NANS Gives Union 7-Days Ultimatum To Call Off Strike

Frustrated by over four months of strike that has kept their future in the balance leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS zone ‘B’ has given the members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) seven days to call off and return to the class room.
The Union warned that at the expiration of the seven days ultimatum they would be left with no
other option than to confront the striking lecturers. House of Reps. To Approve Supplementary Budget To End ASUU Strike

The House of Representatives said on Thursday that it was ready to approve a supplementary budget if that would end the strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities.
The position of the House was made known by the Speaker, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal, after the House was briefed on efforts by its Committee on Education led by Aminu Suleiman to end the strike.
The Speaker appealed to the Federal Government and the striking lecturers to quickly reach an understanding and suspend the strike.
He observed that Nigeria would pay dearly for the lost academic time in the future if the strike was allowed to continue.
Tambuwal added, “Let me use this opportunity to appeal to both the Executive arm and the authorities of ASUU to please quickly resolve the problem. And if there is need for any appropriation, the House will expeditiously assent to it in the interest of our students and the nation.”

BlackBerry said 6 million people signed up for information on BBM.com.
